Think it's impossible to find an affordable hotel in New York City? Given the fact the New York tops the lsit of most expensive cites for a hotel night, this might not be far from the truth. But if you're looking for a way to visit New York on a budget, it migh be worth rethinking the traditional travel times. January is perhaps not the most popular time to take a vacation, but the first month of the year also comes with its perks. This year, the third annual Hotel Week NYC will be held Jan. 3 to 12, 2014, during which 30 hotels in the city — some of which usually charge upward of $500 per night — will offer fixed rates of $100, $200, or $300 a night for budget-concious travelers.

"With nearly 900 room nights sold last year, Hotel Week NYC has been a boon for visitors seeking savings after the holidays and the hotels that have unsold inventory," said Nancy J. Friedman, founder of Hotel Week NYC. "2013 has even more choices, from the trendy Ace Hotel to the brand-new Jade Hotel in Greenwich Village."

Several of the hotels participating in Hotel Week are also home to popular New York restaurants. So if you're looking to combine a budget hotel deal with good food, here are a few (of the many on offer) hotels worth checking out:

Pod 39 Hotel: Salvation Taco

The taqueria and cantina is run by Michelin-starred chef April Bloomfield and successful restaurateur Ken Friedman. The menu is influenced by international cuisines that are represented in taco form. Ingredients such as pork belly, chicken feet, lamb tongue, pig ears, and sweetbreads make this menu unique and delicious. The stylish hotel Pod 39 ($100 per night during Hotel Week), aimed to attract the "young-minded" traveler, is located in the Murray Hill neighborhood, just a short walk to Grand Central Station, the Empire State Building, major shopping areas, bars and restaurants, and public transportation.

The Jade Hotel: Grape & Vine

Tucked away in The Jade Hotel in the West Village, this cozy American bistro run by restauranteur Frederick Lesort offers market-driven American cuisine and an escape from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Seasonally-inspired dishes reflect Chef Kevin Heston’s Midwestern upbringing with a global twist, garnered during years in the kitchens of Wylie Dufresne’s wd-50 and Seamus Mullen’s Boqueria. The boutique 113-room Jade Hotel ($200 per night during Hotel Week) is located in the historic Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

Refinery Hotel: Parker & Quinn

An American bistro with global appeal located in Refinery Hotel, Parker & Quinn, provides a classic bistro dining experience in the center of Manhattan’s Fashion District. The restaurant consists of a casual front tavern, a more formal dining room, and an open kitchen with a chef’s counter. Executive chef Jeffrey Forrest prepares classic, simple, and rustic European-influenced dishes using locally sourced ingredients and produce. The restaurant offers wine and beer pairings, in addition to an eclectic and classic cocktail list designed by Alex Ott, the mixologist behind the cocktail programs at Buddha Bar and Sushi Samba. Refinery Hotel ($200 per night during Hotel Week) opened in May 2013 and is the newest hotel in New York’s Fashion District.

To book a night during Hotel Week, guests just have to mention "Hotel Week" when calling the hotels, or make a booking online. The whole list of participating hotels can be found on the Hotel Week webpage.

New York City Resident- Need an amazing hotel for a night

I'm a New Yorker living in one of the boroughs and every year I travel for my birthday at the end of August.

I'm feeling extremely sorry for myself of course my travel plans have been cancelled. I decided that if at all possible I would like to treat. emphasis treat. myself away from my family and book hotel room in the city. Would love a pool, spa. and somewhere safe!

Is this a ridiculous idea?

I would love to hear opinions.

6 replies to this topic

I don't live in New York but I know that the questions you will be asked are:

- what are your exact dates

it will help to get an answer to your question (Happy Birthday)

William Vale in Williamsburg Brooklyn has the largest outdoor hotel pool in NYC. Most of the other outdoor hotel pools are more dunking pools. Soho House has a great outdoor pool. It's a club but rents hotel rooms.

The Peninsula Hotel has an indoor pool and spa as does the Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca , the Four Seasons downtown, the Park Hyatt in midtown and the Mandarin Oriental.

I don't know whether these are all open.

Even if you find a hotel that is open I would still call and see what amenities are available. They may have suspended some services/features.

I love your idea and I'm in the same boat - lol. I was supposed to spend my August 50th bday in Italy. NYC is also one of my biggest loves and I'm a WNY resident. I decided to treat myself to a couple nights in the city too. (Desperate need for a change in scenery.) Even if I spend most of my time walking around and enjoying a different view I will be happy. I realize things will be different and much may be closed - on the bright side, some of these hotels are offering phenomenal rates. Happy Birthday and enjoy your splurge!

The William Vale is great if you can afford that one. The pool is one of the best in the city but currently has reservations for guests for up to 3 hours only. I imagine weekends would be sell out quick, not so much on weekdays.

The 23rd floor open air Westlight bar is great too with amazing views of Manhattan. Vale Park at the front of the hotel has a casual outdoor vibe with Mister Dips burgers sold from a retro Airstream van. The hotel also has a a good onsite Italian restaurant.

Every Wednesday and Friday there is a pilates session on the rooftop, socially distanced. Also a virtual workout session every Tuesday. A workout session then a few hours at the pool sounds good. So lots to do there including in the nearby neighbourhood.

A great hotel for a getaway.

Affordable Hotels in Harlem ? Under $150 a Night

I plan to travel during the first 2-3 weeks of December 2021. I previously stayed in Washington Square and loved the location and ease of access to the subway, but the hotel no longer exists. I also love the vibe and feel of Harlem and Spanish Harlem. Does anyone know of any affordable hotels in this area or near this area? I have tried to search via hotels.com and Travelocity and my travel dates are too far out or the cost is over $150 a night.

I just need something clean with a tv, bathroom and near a few subway locations.

It's not an area that has many (legal) hotels

Look at the ALoft which is near the 125th street station for the A/B/C/D trains and the M60 SBS bus to LaGuardia and convenient to the Apollo theater.

I transfer to/from the M60 regularly at the closest stop to that hotel. I'm comfortable doing so even late in the evening but I'm not sure if you would be.

Considering your ambitious desires I'm not sure it would be a convenient location for you.

P.S. If you're low maintenance, look at the guest rooms at the Westside Y https://ymcanyc.org/locations/west-side-ymca/guest-rooms The location is terrific for transit and walking. They have a limited number of rooms with private bath.

Typically, the closer to Xmas you visit, the lower the hotel price. If you like the Washington Square location, the Washington Square hotel may appeal.

Thank you so much!! The Washington Square hotel looks great!!

The 10 Most Expensive Hotel Suites in New York City

The Ty Warner Penthouse at the Four Seasons is the most expensive hotel suite in New York City. For $45,000 a night, guests can enjoy 360-degree views of Manhattan through floor-to-ceiling windows, calfskin leather walls, and a grand piano. Guests also have access to a 24-hour personal butler, a Rolls-Royce chauffeur, and a personal trainer. The 4,300-square-foot suite is cleaned twice a day.

The Presidential Suite at The St. Regis New York is the second more expensive suite in New York at $35,000. The hotel does not share images of the suite where Salvador Dali and Marilyn Monroe once slept. Us commoners can only dream how the celebrities decided between one of four full-service bathrooms.

It costs $30,000 a night for hotel guests to feel as through they are amidst the royal court of Louis XV at The Plaza Hotel’s Royal Plaza Suite. Guests can overlook Fifth Avenue or host a party of twelve in the dining room after dinner is prepared in a state-of-the-art kitchen that the hotel describes as “ideal” for guests who travel with a personal chef.

The Peninsula Suite at The Peninsula Hotel goes for $24,000 a night. When guests grow tired of looking at their sky-high view of Fifth Avenue, they can wonder around the suite’s six rooms including a master bedroom, living room, kitchen, study, or second bedroom.

For $20,000 a night, hotel guests in the Tata Suite at The Pierre, New York’s Taj Hotel, can enjoy much more than sweeping views of Central Park. Guests are treated to butlers called the Taj Royal Attaché. There are few limited to the service they provide from unpacking luggage to preparing in-suite meals.

Silk walls, a wood-panelled study, and two-person shower await guests at the Presidential Suite in The Mandarin Oriental. At $18,000 a night, guests can enjoy being in the middle of Columbus Circle while still enjoying views of Central Park at the Hudson River.

Visitors can “experience the grandeur of Versailles in the heart of contemporary New York” for $15,000 a night, according to The New York Palace Hotel. Eight people can fit in the Tower Royal Suite where entire rooms are decked out in gold. Views of Madison Avenue and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are right outside the window.

The Empire Suite at The Carlyle costs $15,000 a night. The Art Deco-insipred three-bedroom suite spans two floors making the space — with its own curated art collection — feel more like your rich friend’s home than a hotel.

Hotel guests can peer out of a telescope on the 22nd floor of the Ritz-Carlton wearing nothing but a plush robe for $14,000. The Royal Suite comes with just one master bedroom, but a second can be added on at request. In addition to the number of bedrooms, guests will also have a choice of seven different types of pillows. Editor’s Note: The featured image is of the Park View Suite, not the Royal Suite described above.

The two-bedroom penthouse at the Trump Soho is the most affordable suite to make the top ten list at just $10,000 a night. Guests here trade views of Central Park for the Hudson River and Empire State Building. Two master bedrooms and oversized bathrooms are situated on opposite sides of the suite making it the perfect property for groups that appreciate their private time.

What would it take for you to drop $45,000 on a hotel stay? An endless supply of chocolate? A complimentary plane tour of New York City? How about some calfskin-covered walls and a Rolls-Royce driven by your own chauffeur?

The Ty Warner Penthouse at the Four Seasons in New York City can provide the third luxury above alongside 360-degree views of Manhattan and a personal butler.

Despite a growing sharing economy and the proliferation of deals-focused travel sites, luxury is still alive and well in Manhattan. Multi-room suites with more bathrooms and flat-screen TVs than guests will cost visitors anywhere from $10,000 to $45,000 a night in New York City.

As a comparison, one of the cheapest accommodations we found in New York was a hostel on the Upper West Side, for $25 a night.

Hotel search site NewYorkHotels.org compiled a list of the ten most expensive hotel suites in the city, based on September rates.

Read below, or click through the slideshow above, for a sneak peak at the rooms and perks that are designed, quite literally, for a king.

B&Bs with Shared Bathrooms

Bed-and-breakfasts can often save you money over hotel rooms, especially if you’re willing to use a bathroom down the hall. And it may be less inconvenient than you think: Sometimes the room you’re supposed to share a bathroom with might not even be booked—giving you the facilities all to yourself.

Dig It
The coziness and camaraderie of a B&B appeal to many travelers—enough to overlook the possibility of having to share a bathroom. You’ll save not only on accommodations but also on meals since breakfast is covered.

Dump It
B&Bs, especially those with shared bathrooms, may lack modern amenities such as flat-screen televisions or multiple outlets for charging electronics. And for travelers who aren’t particularly social, having to show up at a group breakfast with strangers can feel like a chore.

19 of the Most Romantic Restaurants in New York City

Because Valentine's Day will be here before you know it.

Whether you've been together for years or are cozying up to someone new, the restaurant choice can make or break a date night. From intimate ambiances to indulgent cuisine and wine, we've narrowed down the top choices from all across New York City. Here are restaurants that prove incredible meals&ndashand a romantic setting&ndashare the best way to someone's heart.

Although reservations should be planned far in advance, L&rsquoArtusi is well worth the wait. From the outside the cozy Italian eatery may seem nondescript, but upon entering you realize this bi-level restaurant couldn't be further from that. The West Village hotspot is the master of dichotomy&ndash creating an atmosphere that is both energetic and intimate while delivering quality Italian food that is as creative as it is traditional. You would be remiss to not pair at least one pasta, such as the gnocchi with rabbit or the bavette with clams with a bottle of the restaurant&rsquos impeccable selection of Italian wines.

228 West 10th St., New York City, NY 10014 (212)-255-5757

For those who find classic white tablecloth dining a little oppressive, this sultry NoMad hub is the perfect blend of unfussy luxury. Whether you're dining in the glass ceilinged atrium with a view of the stars (both literal and metaphorical&mdashit's been known to be a celeb favorite) or cosseted in the red velvet covered dining room, the atmosphere makes an ideal setting for dinner for two over a lush seafood tower or their signature roast chicken for two with foie gras and black truffle.

1170 Broadway, New York, NY, 10001 (212) 796-1500

If your want to feel like royalty on your romantic evening out, it's hard to outdo this crystal palace, with it's silk-covered walls, 22-foot ceilings, and absolute oodles of gleaming, glittering Baccarat crystal. The food, from Michelin-starred chef Gabriel Kreuther, blends French and German influences while the opulent cocktails from the celeb-magnet bar (sipped from Baccarat glasses, of course) offer everything from an Angostura cotton candy-topped old fashioned to vintage champagne.

28 W 53rd St., New York, NY, 10019 (212) 790-8800

Behind an unmarked door in Greenwich Village lies this jewel box of a sushi restaurant (with seating only at the blonde wood counter and one or two select tables, reservations are a must.) The kaiseki-only menu puts you in the hands of the chefs, who craft exceptionally craveable, mouthwatering bites right in front of you from the very finest fish and seasonal ingredients.

47 E 12th St., New York, NY 10003 (212) 228-6088

For more than 20 years, Eric Ripert has won over critics and discriminating diners alike with his sophisticated, artful approach to seafood. While the main dining room focuses on a more formal experience&ndashjackets are required for gentlemen, and only tasting menus are offered&ndashthe adjacent lounge is a smart (and equally delicious) spot for casually lingering over oysters, caviar, and wine from the impressive 15,000-bottle collection.

155 W. 51st St., New York, NY 10019 (212) 554-1515

First off, reservations are a must (you can't enter the restaurant without one), so simply being here feels exclusive. Then there's the handsome space, kitted out with tan leather banquettes, emerald green walls, and, in true Ralph Lauren fashion, equestrian-inspired art. The menu favors American comforts, as evidenced by the best-selling, bacon and cheese-topped Polo Burger. Pro tip: it's so generously sized, it's great for sharing.

1 E. 55th St., New York, NY 10022 (212) 207-8562

Set in a historic 1767 carriage house once owned by Aaron Burr, this West Village institution exudes romance with candlelit tables, a crackling fireplace, live piano music, and decadent prix fixe menus. Not surprisingly, it remains one of the city's most popular places to pop the question since opening in 1973.

17 Barrow St., New York, NY 10014 (212) 255-8649

Let this pint-sized, all-day eatery transport you from the West Village to Paris with its charming decor (think marble bar, tiny candlelit tables, vintage flatware) and classic bistro menu (think croissants, steak tartare, and coq a vin) by Jody Williams. Given its snug size and popularity, Buvette crowds up quickly&ndashgiving you all the more reason to get closer to your companion.

42 Grove St., New York City, NY 10014 (212)-255-3590

Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior and relatively quiet pocket of Williamsburg, because this highly acclaimed Italian restaurant by Missy Robbins is a sure bet. In true Brooklyn fashion, the design is understated but chic, with a wood-beamed ceiling, concrete floors, and white walls. While the space is certainly a looker, it's Robbins's irresistible, handmade pastas (like her Rigatoni Diavola and Pink Peppercorn Mafaldini) that keep Lilia perpetually packed.

567 Union Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11211 (718) 576-3095

Upon entering Acme you feel as if you&rsquove walked into a speakeasy not because of its art deco decor of wooden chairs and leather couches, but from the elusive atmosphere. With it&rsquos delicious menu with a wide array of bistro choices&ndash come for a drink, or a meal, but stay for the experience.

9 Great Jones St., New York City, NY 10012 (212)-203-2121

Whether you opt for more casual bites and drinks in the Tavern&ndashnab a coveted seat at the bustling bar if you can&ndashor go for a more formal meal in the Dining Room, you'll be rewarded with friendly service, vibrant fresh floral displays, and hearty yet refined cooking by Chef Michael Anthony. Another perk? Owner and restaurateur Danny Meyer has eliminated tipping from all of his establishments, so you can let the wine really flow.

42 E. 20th St., New York, NY 10003 (212) 477-0777

While the decor of this family-owned midtown French restaurant couldn't be any more romantic&ndashthanks to deep red banquettes, mirrored walls, and the famously lush floral arrangements&ndashwhat keeps the dining room packed night after night is the kitchen's commitment to classic, time-tested dishes like buttery Dover sole, silky foie gras terrine, and light-as-air soufflés.

3 East 52nd St., New York, NY 10022 (212) 752-1495

Oysters get all the aphrodisiac glory, but if you really want to impress your seafood-loving lover, head to this Union Square outpost. For a datenight "wow" moment, the whole fish sashimi is a must, but don't skimp on the creative cooked options like madai snapper in Peking duck broth and the highly shareable smallplates. And sure, maybe some oysters for the table too.

233 Park Ave. South, New York, NY 10003 212-209-1055

Though the interiors of this Soho mainstay haven't changed much in over 40 years&ndashimagine quirky original artwork, pink neon, and black tin ceilings&ndashit's still one of the city's most beloved date spots. And in contrast to its bustling neighborhood, Raoul's feels warm and inviting. You can't go wrong with the signature steak au poivre or frisee salad, and if you can't secure a table, the bar is also terrific for cozying up with someone (and snagging one of the 12 burgers available every night).

180 Prince St., New York, NY 10012 (212) 966-3518

The tricky (and fun) part is finding the unmarked door. But once you do, you'll be led to your own private wooden booth draped in bamboo curtains. After perusing the menu of savory Japanese small plates (like homemade tofu and shrimp tempura), tap the buzzer on your table when you're ready to order (and anytime else you need your server). It's such a wholly unique and intimate experience, it's easy to forget that you're not dining alone.

77 North 6th St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 11211 (718) 388-8985

Hidden in the back room of the craft cocktail bar of the same name, this Village gem makes the most of the freshest produce with a rotating menu that highlights the beauty of seasonal veggies, fruits, and proteins. The moody lighting and portions perfectly sized for sampling a variety make it an ideal hideaway for a cozy date night.

33 W 8th St., New York, NY 10011 646-490-8772

Spend the evening in a French bistro that may rival those of Paris&ndash without even venturing out of Manhattan. The romantic ambiance of red leather banquets and wood panels is made even more marvelous with a menu full of bistro classics: everything from escargots to tarte tartin. A choice that is equally as good for an indulgent lunch as it is for a romantic meal&ndashnestled within a quiet street in the West Village, Petit Boucherie can be considered the crème de la crème of New York bistros.

14 Christopher St., New York City, NY (646)-756-4145

Dining at this Nolita Italian spot evokes hanging in a rustic farmhouse. (There's lots of dark wood, exposed brick, and pots and pans hanging just about everywhere.) And the cuisine, as you might imagine, is just as comforting and cozy. The artisanal pastas shift with the seasons, but the popular Tuscan black kale salad with anchovy lemon vinaigrette remains on the menu year-round.

47 Bond St., New York, NY 10012 (212) 533-1932

Come sunset and evening, the views of the Hudson River, Brooklyn Bridge, and Manhattan skyline are nothing short of breathtaking. Thankfully, they're matched by the serene ambiance, faultless service, and Michelin-starred New American cuisine by chef Brad Steelman. While gentlemen are expected to wear jackets and ties at dinner, daytime dining is a breezier affair. When the weather is warm, request a table on the patio.
